Bukom Banku is one of Ghana’s favourite boxers. He is renowned for his attributes both in and out of the ring. Banku’s prominence in the ring is something to write home about as he had risen through the ranks winning bronze at the Heavy weight All African Games and winning 28 fights with no loses. 21 of those victories was by way of knock out. His attributes out of the ring is however mostly negative. Braimah Kamoko as he is popularly called has always managed to grab news headlines for all the wrong reasons. He made news with his bleaching saga, beating of his wife and several others, stripping his wife naked just to prove a point, his involvement in Ghanaian politics, his unsavoury words against public personalities and lots more.

Banku met his meter in the much anticipated fight which was slated on Saturday 21st of October. Bastie Samir the challenger not given much credit. As expected the night started with Bukum Banku getting a resounding cheer from the crowd. The crowd got a run for their money with both boxers delivering on top notch entertainment. Bastie Samir toppled the crowd expectation by knocking down his opponent in the seventh round. Now here are pointers on why and how Bukom Banku lost.

1. FITNESS: Bukom Banku’s fitness is one to question as the fighter is almost always distracted with his negative attention seeking. And yes, he always grabs media attention. Bastie referred to Banku as a comedian rather than a boxer during the build up to the bout. Banku has become over confident and trains lesser than usual but finds time to joke and dance around. Knocked out in seven rounds in proof enough.

2. AGE: At 37, Banku is not getting any younger. The average boxer’s peak is around the ages of 25 to 35, from then is a downward slope. This is especially so in the heavy weight division. These “giants” get slower with age. Typical example is the Anthony Joshua- Klitschko bout.

3. QUALITY BOUTS: Banku may have had some worthy opponents in the past but ones he faced recently are not ones to write anything about. Ayitey Powers has parted been vindicated in his statements about Banku lacking enough international exposure. Partly because he himself got a whooping.

4. VICES: Let’s admit it the man likes to chill. Girls, Booze, Dancing and a whole lot more is what he likes to do. Agor) w) nani so dodo.

Can’t wait for the rematch.
