A war has been waging since the eruption of dancehall music in Ghana. Two giants who have made credible claims to the throne are Stonebwoy of BHIM Nation and Shatta Wale of Shatta Movement. Samini held the spot when the genre was relatively less popular in the country. Shatta Wale then Bandana did all he could to challenge Batman Samini during that time but he was not really up to the task. Samini was simply more hot and appealing. Shatta Wale proved to be a survivor by being persistent even after he almost faded out. He then rose from the ashes pushing dancehall music to different heights. We can all agree that Samini was this time round toppled by the new and improved Shatta Wale.
It however took Stonebwoy, a prodigy of Samini to challenge Shatta Wale in the new era of dancehall music. Stonebwoy relatively younger also had an interesting story of his own. He survived an accident that claimed his twin brother and left him handicapped. But this passionate young man did not let the incident hold him back. He also proved himself worthy of the mantle. Now the two are somewhat our own version of Ronaldo and Messi with each other’s fans claiming their idol holds title of dancehall king in Ghana. Shatta Wale occasionally throws spice in the rivalry by attacking his younger competition. They are however “cool” most of the times.
Comparing the two is somewhat difficult because Stonebwoy is a great lyricist and Shatta Wale makes songs all can dance to. What is clear is the fact that we need both of them in the industry and we need their sort of competition too.
